Dr. Nazeela Sabir Awan and Dr. Asadullah Khan Awan are a married couple in medicine and are co-founders of My Med Mentor. They both attended UC Davis School of Medicine and matched as a couple for Internal Medicine residency at Yale.
Dr. Nazeela Sabir Awan is the co-founder of My Med Mentor. She created this platform because she firmly believes that everyone deserves an opportunity to have an experienced mentor during their long and difficult journey in medicine. With the right support, guidance, and discipline, she believes that every applicant, regardless of their background or statistics, can accomplish their dream of becoming a physician. She has over 10 years of experience in mentoring diverse applicants, including nontraditional and disadvantaged students, in their medical journey. She has written countless letters of recommendation for students and has served on the admissions committee.
She attended UC Davis for college and majored in Biological Sciences, with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. She graduated from UC Davis School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine Primary Care residency training at Yale as a Yale/Stanford Johnson and Johnson Global Health Scholar. During her gap years, she studied at the University of Pennsylvania and served as a clinic manager for a non-profit clinic. She was recently a faculty member at a large academic institution. Her interests include underserved medicine, health policy and advocacy, op ed writing, medical education, and mentorship. During her training, she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, awarded the Intern of the Year Award, and recognized for her leadership and commitment to the underserved.
During her free time, she enjoys playing tennis and board games, hiking, traveling, and trying new recipes.
Dr. Asadullah Khan Awan works as an addiction medicine physician at the California Department of Corrections. Recently, he worked as a faculty physician at a large academic institution in California. He practices Internal Medicine, both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. His career interests include addiction medicine, refugee health, and underserved communities.
He graduated summa cum laude from UC Davis, where he majored in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior and was elected as the College of Biological Sciences’ Undergraduate Student of the Year. He then took a gap year and obtained his Masters of Public Health with an emphasis on homelessness. He was admitted to numerous top 10 medical schools across the nation and decided to go to UC Davis School of Medicine on a prestigious merit-based scholarship - the Regents Scholarship. After graduating in the top quartile of his medical school, he continued his training at the Yale Internal Medicine Primary Care program, where he was a Yale/Stanford Johnson and Johnson Global Health Scholar.
His personal interests include pre-medical mentoring and medical education. Throughout his medical journey, he has provided guidance and mentorship to numerous students at all levels of training. He has served in leadership roles in pre-medical organizations, participated in a formal pre-medical mentorship program under a medical school dean, written many letters of recommendation, and has served on the admissions committee. He wants to use his personal experiences to guide others in their medical journey of becoming the best applicants they can be.
During his free time, he enjoys hanging out with his family, photography, and watching movies.
